India’s January factory PMI slips as new orders rise more slowly
Growth in India’s factory activity slipped in January from December’s two-year high as new orders rose at a weaker rate despite factories keeping price increases to a minimum, a business survey showed on Monday. Cooling growth and inflation could give the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reason to cut interest rates again in the coming months but any move may depend on the government’s annual budget due on 28 February. The HSBC Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), compiled by Markit, fell to a three-month low of 52.9 in January from December’s two-year high of 54.5.
Marking another milestone in the country's deterrence capability, India successfully carried out the maiden canister-based trial of its most potent missile Agni-V, which has a strike range of over 5000 kms and can carry a nuclear warhead of over one tonne.

Bad loans bite Bank of Baroda
The 68% fall in Bank of Baroda’s December quarter profit appears the least of its problems. The bank reported an operating profit of 6.4%, though it must be noted that this comes on top of a 2.8% decline in the year-ago quarter. The key worry, of course, is the deterioration in asset-quality yardsticks. One, slippages or fresh addition to bad loans, were Rs.3,042 crore in the December quarter. That compares with Rs.1,758 crore in the September quarter and Rs.1,881 crore in the three months ended June. What’s more worrying is the contribution to slippages from the loans already restructured—this amounted to Rs.1,008 crore, compared with Rs.1,199 crore in the first half of this financial year.
NDA fast-tracks green nod for 190 projects worth Rs.6.31 lakh crore in June-December
Environmental clearance has been given to as many as 190 projects entailing an investment of Rs.6.31 lakh crore across sectors like mining and steel during June-December as part of the National Democratic Alliance government's policy to fast-track industrial development and generate jobs. A senior official said the projects that have been approved belong to both public and private sectors and the clearances are subject to mitigation measures being undertaken by these firms. The policy paralysis of the scam-battered erstwhile United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had held up several big-ticket projects leading to a shrinking of capital investment and the economy slowing down to a sub-five-per cent growth rate. The companies that have been granted environmental clearances include India Cements and Ultratech Cement for cement projects, ONGC and Cairn India for oil and gas exploration and Rungta Mines for a steel project.
